September 2025 | In a recent conversation with Geberit, Yuichi Kodai explores the deeper meaning of Zen in contemporary architecture. Moving beyond the common view of Zen as simple minimalism, the discussion focuses on how spaces can reflect the inner self through our physical engagement with them.

"When you touch a surface, you are not just sensing texture; you are becoming aware of your presence in that moment," Kodai explains. Using the renovation of a house in Stäfa, Switzerland, as an example, he describes how the use of burnt wood and clay walls creates a tactile bridge between the body and the built environment. The interview also touches upon the Japanese concept of 'Ma'—the essential relationship between space and time—and the cultural significance of cleanliness as a meditative ritual.
For the studio, these intimate spaces, including the bathroom as a place of refuge, are opportunities to compose movements and materials into a sense of profound calm.
