February 2023 | Expo: What Makes a Place Work?
In the February 2023 issue of Monocle, I was invited to join a group of 50 leading international creatives—including award-winning architects and curators—to answer a fundamental question:
What makes a place work?.
For this "Expo," I selected the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) as a prime example of a space where the "tangibles" of architecture successfully create an "intangible" sense of well-being.
"An outdoor terrace filled with shadows creates a public space where people, art and architecture meet. The terrace is a distilled version of the greater environment of Miami; a mix of sea, park, jungle and urban city. You immediately relax when observing the joyful faces of people under the roof."
This contribution reflects the core values of KODAI AND ASSOCIATES: the belief that architecture should be a sensitive distillation of its environment. By prioritizing natural light, a connection to the landscape, and the creation of "meditative sanctuaries," we strive to design spaces that, like the PAMM terrace, invite people to pause and connect with their surroundings.
